WELCOME TO THE DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNICATION AT UTAH TECH UNIVERSITY

Utah Tech’s Communication Department graduates are skilled, knowledgeable, and prepared to create their own path for success. The department offers two distinct programs to students: Media Studies and Communication Studies.

The Media Studies program focuses on production, from writing to video to social media, and helps students learn to be critical users of media. Media Studies students are prepared for a wide range of careers, including journalism, public relations, marketing, advertising, media production, TV and radio, and social media. Applied Leadership Emphasis, B.S.

This degree emphasis explores different styles of leadership. In these courses, students evaluate, critique, and adapt their own leadership style while applying leadership to real world examples and media portrayals.

Health Communication Emphasis, B.S.

This degree emphasis enables students to become skilled in communication between patients and their health providers, family and caregiver communication dynamics, the dissemination of health information in the community, developing public health campaigns, and using communication technologies to improve health-related outcomes.

Communication Studies, B.S.

The Department of Communication at Utah Tech University promotes ethical practices of all forms of communication, particularly within the academic areas of human communication and a degree completion program in organizational communication and leadership. Students receive training in ethics, leadership, critical thinking, and effective interaction skills. Guided by theory and application, students are trained to produce and critically interpret human communication messages through the design, production, and delivery of oral and written communication. The department also houses the Lambda Pi Eta Honor Society, an honor society recognized by the National Communication Association.

Organization and Leadership Emphasis

The communication studies degree completion program (comm-dcp) is designed to help full-time employees and stay-at-home parents finish their bachelor’s degree after completing their general education requirements or associate degree. Through this program, students can earn a Bachelor of Science in Communication Studies with an Emphasis in Organization and Leadership. Students meet on Tuesday or Wednesday evenings and complete one course per month, with a focus on skills that apply to workplace leadership and creativity. This schedule allows students who have finished their general education to complete a bachelor’s degree in a series of five semesters. Limited spots available.

Program Learning Outcomes

  • Write about and apply the tenets of communication theories, concepts, models, and perspectives that span the breath of the discipline.
  • Evaluate effective and appropriate written and oral communication in interpersonal, intercultural, organizational, public, and online contexts.
  • Implement critical thinking and reasoning in relational, mediated and cultural interactions to promote and improve communication effectiveness.
  • Differentiate methods of communication research by critiquing existing scholarly research and producing individual scholarly writings.
  • Generate communication activities that prioritize social responsibility and ethical awareness in a variety of contexts.
